Where do I sleep? Dixon’s Campground which is a sweet car-camping spot! Dixon's has a paved drive to each site, clean bathrooms and showers, a heated pool, a camp-store for odds and ends, and each of our Yogasurf sites is hooked up with electricity and potable water. Showers cost 25 cents for 5 minutes and always have hot water. People choose to camp at Yogasurf in all sorts of ways. Here are examples from past guests:
-Traditional Tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag
-Cot, foam pad, or air mattress inside your tent
-Air mattress/pad and sleeping bag inside your car/truck
-Convert a van into a bedroom and roll up in style, bed or futon in the back!
-Small pop-up or trailer (Be sure to run measurements by me)
-Don't own your own camping gear? Ask a friend or consider renting gear from your local outdoor retailer. If I learn about camping rentals in Vermont, I will post it here!
What if it rains, is foggy, or chilly? Yogasurf is an outdoor event and will be held rain or shine. That being said, if it's too cold or rainy for morning yoga on the beach, we will head to Yoga on York studio for morning class. Surfing in the rain is actually pretty fun, once you get your wetsuit on and do some warm-ups on the beach with our bodacious instructors! Your wetsuit offers a layer of insulation and helps keep your body temperature warm. We usually set up a shade tent on the beach to provide a sun/rain-free space for lunch. We have to be ready for a variety of weather and that means packing rain gear and having a blanket or extra towels if the weather report isn't in our favor. Under no circumstances will we be surfing during lightening storms or any dangerous weather.
I have dietary restrictions or I'm not a vegetarian. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions, allergies, sensitivities, and diets. Please contact Gaby directly to see how we can make it work! If you're not a vegetarian, that's ok. We serve vegetarian food because a weekend of giving your digestive systems a break, can invigorate and inspire good health! I'm not a vegetarian either and guarantee you will feel fed, full, and most important, nourished after a weekend of wholesome food.
Can I surf if I wear glasses? Some people choose to wear contacts when in the water, while others wear glasses with eyeglass leashes. There are specially designed glasses for those who spend a lot of time in the waves. It comes down to exploring what feels good and figuring out what you're comfortable with. Google "surfing with glasses" to read more.
I'm older/not athletic/nervous/overweight - Can I still learn to surf? Yes! People learn to surf at all ages and at all ability levels, shapes, and sizes. In the beginning, you will spend time riding the white water to shore, first on your belly, then your knees, maybe a lunge, or right up to stand. We will also paddle out to catch waves where things get a little more technical. Learning to surf really is about having fun while tuning into the rhythm of mama ocean. It doesn't matter if you ride the white foamy water into shore all day or paddle out to catch waves, as long as you are having fun and smiling!
What happens during a surf lesson? On day one we arrive early to get sized for rental gear and then we head out to the beach where our instructors teach the basics about equipment, safety, paddling, and pop-ups. We will practice dry land techniques and then hit the water. The instructors are board-free so they can easily connect with students in the water and launch you into as many waves as possible! Each lesson lasts two hours.
What past guests say about Yogasurf:
"I feel comfortable going into a surf shop on my own, renting gear, and continuing to learn surfing. I felt welcomed by the staff at Liquid Dreams!"
"What a nourishing weekend. The wholesome food, easy conversations, thoughtful asana practice, playful surf instructors, rhythm of the waves, falling asleep tired and warm with owls hooting overhead - it was all food for the soul. I left feeling grounded and grateful."
"I didn't know about all vegetarian food but after the first meal I realized it wasn't as hard as I thought. I always felt full and I felt great for the week after the retreat."
"I made friends - really great friends that I've traveled with to surf again in Maine and Costa Rica! The experience uplifted me and helped me get closer to my dream of becoming a surfer. Very grateful."
"Gaby’s Yogasurf retreat truly allowed me to unplug, get into the present moment, and celebrate the beauty of life that is available to all of us every day when we allow it in. The community vibe of the retreat was very welcoming and nonjudgmental, and the morning yoga on the beach was otherworldly! So grateful to have had this opportunity."
